Ken Reece
Trumpet / Cornet / Flugel Horn
Following retirement from
British Gas and British Telecom, Ken's full time employment now
is his music, having been with Pete’s band for well over 13
years making him the longest serving member of the band. Born
in Fulham London, he has lived in Sanderstead Surrey for many
years. His first gig was in 1947 for a Wedding Reception at
Finsbury Town Hall when he was paid a sum of 7s/6d. His first
jazz band was as a member of the Croham Valley Stompers then led
by Pat Hawes. Early influences were George Webbs Dixielanders,
Tommy Ladnier, Mezz Messrow and Graham Bells Australian Jazz
Band and over the years the recorded works of Ruby Braff, Eddie
Condon Bobby Hackett and Bix Biederbecke mixed with various
Dixieland styles from the 1920’s to the present day. Throughout
his musical carear Ken has also switched from the horns to
playing Double Bass and Tenor Sax.
In between playing with the Pete Allen Jazz Band he finds time
to dep with many London musicians including the Lamb and Flag
Band and the bands of Dick Laurie and Brian White. His hobby
has to be maintaining his house which dates back to 1935.

Kens approach to his music
today is probably best described as being a ‘modern style
dixieland jazz trumpet player’ offering a jazzy melodic strong
lead resulting in the recognisable sound of Pete’s band. He
enjoys the personal touch of the band members interacting with
the audience resulting in a showband of jazz which Ken believes
is the perfect combination and indeed unique to the continued
success of the Pete Allen Jazz Band.
